When is the best time to visit Bhutan?

Bhutan is a year-round destination. Summers (June-August) are humid in the south Your visa and warm in central regions, with monsoon rains primarily affecting the south. Autumn (September-November) is sunny with some early snowfall. Winter (December-February) is crisp and cold, with snow above 3,000 metres and gale-force winds in high altitudes. Spring (March-May) features blooming nature and warming temperatures.

For telephone calls, Bhutan’s country code is +975. Make sure you add this to the beginning of any number if calling Bhutan from abroad.

 

Do I need a visa to enter Bhutan?

Visitors of all nationalities, except Indian, need a visa to enter Bhutan. Most must apply for and obtain this visa before traveling. Visitors from Bangladesh and Maldives can obtain their visa either in advance or upon arrival. Indian nationals can apply for a permit with an Indian passport or voter ID; those under 18 can use a passport or birth certificate and must be accompanied by a legal guardian. Nationals from Switzerland and Thailand with diplomatic or official passports can get a visa upon arrival.

 

How much does the visa cost?

A one-time fee of US$40 is charged for processing your application, payable along with your Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) when submitting your visa application.

 

What is SDF and how is it used?

The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is a daily charge paid by visitors to support Bhutan’s development. Collected by the national exchequer, the SDF funds projects in healthcare, education, infrastructure, environmental and cultural preservation, and local business support. It helps maintain Bhutan’s forest cover and carbon neutrality, and ensures visitors continue to enjoy a tranquil and intimate experience.

 

How much is the SDF?

The SDF is USD 100 per night for adults from all countries except India. Children aged 6-11 pay USD 50 per night, while those under 6 are exempt. Indian nationals with a valid passport or Voter ID pay Nu. 1,200 per night, or the equivalent in Indian rupees. Indian children aged 6-11 pay Nu./INR 600 per night, with those under 6 exempt.

 

If a guest decides to leave Bhutan earlier than planned, are they eligible for an SDF refund?

Yes, the SDF will be refunded for any nights that are not spent in the kingdom.

 

How long does my visa allow me to stay in Bhutan?

The visa allows you to remain in Bhutan for a maximum period of 90 days from the date of entry.

 

What is the cost if I want to drive my own car in Bhutan?

Driving your own car into Bhutan costs Nu. 4,500 per car per day, plus an additional charge for a mandatory guide. Your car must meet Bhutan’s Road Safety and Transport Authority requirements and have valid driver’s license, insurance, pollution control documentation, and an entry permit. An Indian driver’s license is accepted. The same fees and rules apply for motorbikes. If the vehicle isn’t owned by the travelers, an authorization letter is required.

 

How do I get to Bhutan?

Bhutan’s international airport is in Paro, served by Drukair and Bhutan Airlines with flights from cities like Bangkok, Delhi, Kolkata, and Singapore. Private jets and charters can also fly in with prior approval. Domestic airports are in Yonphula, Bumthang, and Gelephu.

 

What kind of accommodation is available in Bhutan?

Bhutan offers a wide range of accommodation, from luxurious five-star hotels to cozy homestays in traditional village settings.

 

Is Bhutan safe to travel?

Bhutan is a very safe destination with minimal crime, even for solo travellers. However, be cautious with stray dogs, as they are not domesticated, and avoid feeding or touching wild animals. Safety hazards like flooding and landslides can occur, especially during the monsoon season (June-September). Check with your hotel or tour operator for updates on any potential disruptions.

 

Where can I exchange currency?

You can change your local currency for ngultrum upon arrival at Paro International Airport or at banks, larger hotels and authorised currency exchange businesses in Thimphu.

 

Are permits required to enter National Parks in Bhutan?

Yes, permits are required to enter National Parks in Bhutan. However the process can be done online and the permit should be issued quickly.

 

Are there certain things I can’t take out of Bhutan when I leave?

Keeping important antiques and artefacts in Bhutan is a key part of how we preserve our heritage for future generations. We have a law that sets out which artistic, historic, cultural, religious, social, archaeological and technical objects you may not take with you when you leave. To ensure any items you acquire comply with the law, you will need an Export Permit for Non-Antique Artefacts.

 

Can I use my credit card and ATM card in Bhutan?

Visa and Mastercard are accepted at ATMs and banks in Bhutan, primarily in urban areas. In other regions, services may be limited. For wider use, download the goBoB or MyPay digital wallet apps, which can be linked to international credit cards and are accepted throughout the country. Cash in US dollars, Indian rupees, or Bhutanese ngultrum is also widely accepted. It’s advisable to carry some cash in these currencies.

 

How much cash can I bring into Bhutan?

You may bring cash equivalent to US$10,000 into the country.
