Do You Believe in Rebirth?

In the Buddhist context, if we want to know about our previous life, we are to look at the state of our current one. If we are to know about our next life, we are to look at our actions in the present one. The idea of “karma” (cause and effect) is deeply associated with the state of rebirth. Rebirth conceptualises the belief in the eternal existence of the soul.

If rebirth is real, this eternal soul that lies within each of us, has travelled places, met people, done deeds and achieved things that we are oblivious of. Someone once said that if you want something deeply, it means you have it in the future. If our eternal soul yearns for it, could it mean that we already had it in another time, another place, another life?

If rebirth is real, does that mean our emotions, decisions and choices are premeditated? Does the soul make better judgement or just repeat mistakes because there is no memory? This eternal soul, that travels from one body to another and one lifetime to the next must recognise foes, danger and mistake. Is that what people termed the subconscious mind, the intuition?

If rebirth is real, our soul must be drawn to people we choose to connect with. Although we don’t know how far our soul has travelled, it must mean that this eternal entity is wiser, careful and more aware. But why are they drawn to bad deeds and bad choices? Are lessons really learnt? When this soul moves onto the next body, will it be wiser than it is right now? How far will it go? Till when will it go?

In Bhutan, the concept of rebirth is woven into daily life. From the prayer flags fluttering in the wind to the sacred monasteries perched on cliffs, every element reflects a connection to past, present, and future. Whether you’re seeking answers to life’s big questions or simply drawn to the serenity of Bhutan’s landscapes, the journey here is one of self-discovery and spiritual connection.
